Arc Flash Studies — Frequently Asked
What is an arc flash study and when is it required?
An arc flash study calculates the incident energy released during an electrical fault so workers can be protected with the correct PPE and labels. NFPA 70E requires it for any facility with energized work above 50 V, and most studies should be reviewed every five years or after any significant electrical change.
Which standards do AK&J Electric arc flash studies follow?
Every study is performed to NFPA 70E (2024) and IEEE 1584-2018, with short-circuit and protective-device coordination calculations referencing ANSI C37 and IEEE Buff Book methodologies.
What deliverables are included with a study?
You receive a PE-stamped report, a one-line diagram, short-circuit and coordination results, load flow analysis, NFPA 70E-compliant arc flash labels for every piece of equipment in scope, and PPE category recommendations. Optional add-ons include LOTO procedures and on-site staff training.
How long does an arc flash study take?
Typical industrial sites with 25–75 buses are completed in 3–6 weeks from data collection to PE-stamped delivery. Emergency turnarounds are available — contact our 24/7 line for scheduling.
Do you provide on-site arc flash training?
Yes. We deliver NFPA 70E electrical safety and arc flash awareness training on-site or remotely, customized to your equipment, PPE, and energized-work procedures.
