Commissioning & Pre-Commissioning
Pre-energization verification, end-to-end relay testing, and live-system commissioning for new and retrofit electrical installations — with NETA-format documentation and AHJ sign-off.

Commissioning & Pre-Commissioning
AK&J Electric performs full pre-commissioning and commissioning on new and retrofitted electrical systems. We verify every aspect of the installation against the design intent — catching discrepancies before power is applied — and provide the documentation your AHJ and insurer require.
From visual/mechanical inspection to end-to-end relay testing and load-flow validation, every project closes with a signed NETA report, as-built one-line markup, and an O&M handover package.
What Our Team Delivers
Pre-Commissioning Checks
- Visual & mechanical inspection (NETA ATS Section 7)
- Bus & cable hi-pot dielectric withstand
- Insulation resistance and continuity verification
- CT/PT ratio, polarity, burden, and secondary continuity
- Grounding & bonding verification per IEEE 80 / NEC
- Torque verification on bus joints and terminations
Commissioning & Energization
- Protective relay setting upload and end-to-end testing
- Trip-timing, pickup, and zone coordination verification
- Control scheme, interlock, and safety-shutdown functional tests
- Sequence-of-operation and breaker close/trip testing

Commissioning — Frequently Asked
What's the difference between pre-commissioning and commissioning?
Pre-commissioning is the de-energized verification work — visual/mechanical inspection, hi-pot, insulation resistance, torque verification, and CT/PT secondary checks — that confirms an installation is safe to energize. Commissioning is the live-system validation that follows, including end-to-end relay testing, control logic, sequence-of-operation, and initial load checks.
Which standards do you commission to?
Every project is executed to NETA ATS (acceptance testing specification), IEEE C37 series for switchgear, IEEE 80 for grounding, and the manufacturer's installation and commissioning instructions. We deliver a NETA-format report suitable for AHJ and insurer review.
Do you handle relay settings and end-to-end testing?
Yes. We upload settings from the coordination study, perform per-element pickup/timing verification on every relay, and run end-to-end trip tests through the breaker — with signed as-commissioned setting sheets in the closeout package.
Can you support AHJ inspections?
Yes. We provide the full pre-energization checklist, hi-pot and grounding records, and on-site representation during AHJ walk-throughs. Our documentation is structured to satisfy the most common jurisdictional requirements out of the box.
How early should commissioning be engaged on a new project?
Ideally during the design phase, so the protection scheme, interlock logic, and test points are commissioning-ready. At minimum we should be on site 4–6 weeks before energization to coordinate hi-pot windows and AHJ inspections.
